On some categorical-algebraic conditions in S-protomodular categories

    Get PDF
In the context of protomodular categories, several additional conditions have been considered in order to obtain a closer group-like behavior. Among them are locally algebraic cartesian closedness and algebraic coherence. The recent notion of S-protomodular category, whose main examples are the category of monoids and, more generally, categories of monoids with operations and Jo\'{o}nsson-Tarski varieties, raises a similar question: how to get a description of S-protomodular categories with a strong monoid-like behavior. In this paper we consider relative versions of the conditions mentioned above, in order to exhibit the parallelism with the "absolute" protomodular context and to obtain a hierarchy among S-protomodular categories

Utilizing Goal Attaimnent Concepts To Empower Nursing Students For Effective Interprofessional Communication

Ineffective interprofessional communication is an identified issue affecting patient safety in health care. A multitude of barriers can impact interactions between and among disciplines leading to relationship strain and adverse patient outcomes. Nursing and other health care professions have limited curricular focus on interdisciplinary communication and collaboration. Interventions to improve interprofessional teamwork and collaboration are important foci for students in the health care profession. A learning event with the goal of student development of effective interdisciplinary communication was delivered to a group of nursing students in the classroom setting. King\u27s Theory of Goal Attainment (1981) and interacting systems framed the event. An evidence-based lecture underpinned importance of effective communication and the potential barriers. A case study and the SBAR tool assisted students to organize and plan for interactions with physicians. A period of reflection following the case study allowed for expression of perceptions related to the interactions within personal, interpersonal, and social systems required for effective health care teams. Students engaged learning within the affective domain through discussion about emotional responses related to communication strategies and received formative feedback from faculty. Dialog supported acknowledgments of heightened awareness regarding the importance of interdisciplinary communication and tactics to improve effectiveness of interactions. Discussion among participants of the learning exercise substantiated the need for increased emphasis and incorporation of interprofessional communication training in health care curricula and practice. Further research is necessary to dete1mine additional interventions to enhance interprofessional communication for the ultimate goal of patient safet

Mentorship: A Powerful Tool for IPG Success

Because Canada espouses principles of diversity and multiculturalism, many international pharmacy graduates (IPGs) immigrate to Canada expecting to find employment using skills for which they trained in their home country. Upon arrival, they often face challenges in credential recognition and licensure. Barriers include systemic discrimination, socio-psychological isolation, the precipitous decline in social status, and financial challenges of navigating the steps that bridge the training received in their home countries to the scopes of practice in Canada. The problem of practice (PoP) explored in this organizational improvement plan (OIP) focuses on the lack of opportunity that IPGs have to access clinical workplace settings prior to being assessed for entry to practice competencies. Health Alliance is an organization that works in the regulatory space for internationally educated healthcare professionals, and that provides a service that facilitates the IPG path to licensure in Canada. This OIP proposes housing a mentorship program at Health Alliance, to specifically address the experiential learning, and knowledge and skill gaps that have been identified as barriers to success for international pharmacy graduates pursuing licensure, and ultimately, gainful employment as pharmacists in Canada. This OIP examines the PoP through the lenses of sense of community theory and critical race theory to explore how the lived experiences of diverse internationally educated skilled immigrants are impacted by the process of seeking credential recognition and licensure. Change at the leadership, cultural and operational levels will be facilitated through Kotter’s eight stage change model and will be evaluated using an empowerment evaluation approach

Why Knowing How to Engage Cross-Culturally Matters: Kenyan Principals\u27 Experiences In Cross-Cultural Collaboration

How Kenyan principals engage cross-culturally may provide applicable approaches for others in education. This study sought to examine how Kenyan principals navigate the complexities of working in such a diverse country as Kenya, with over 40 native tribes. Through the interview process the principals shared their many challenges working cross-culturally, but more importantly, what strategies and approaches they use to navigate these complex relationships. This study also examined how these strategies and approaches align with the current cultural frameworks; cultural competence, cultural intelligence and cultural humility. The findings show that Kenyan principals use multiple approaches that align with all three of the frameworks, but most notably with cultural humility. This finding highlights the importance of more research in the study of cross-cultural collaboration and the cultural frameworks

Synthesis of fructo-oligosaccharides using grape must and sucrose as raw materials

Grape must market has been rising and there is an increasing interest to use it as a natural replacement for traditional sugars. Food or beverages with prebiotic compounds, including fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS), emerge as an alternative for the new health style trend. The aim of this work was to investigate whether the combination of grape must with sucrose was a suitable raw material for the synthesis of FOS. This way, a prebiotic syrup containing fructose and FOS, potentially useful for the formulation of foods and beverages, could be obtained. The main process consisted of three stages, namely conditioning of grape must (oxidation of the initial glucose concentration, stage 1), synthesis of FOS [incorporation of 20, 30 and 55% (w/w) sucrose, and 3.5% v/v Viscozyme L − 4.2 U/mg-, stage 2], and conditioning of the final product (oxidation of the glucose generated during the synthesis, stage 3). At stage 1, glucose concentration decreased from 222.8 mg/mL to 47.2 mg/mL, representing a decay of about 80% regarding the initial concentration of glucose. At stage 2, incorporating 20% (w/w) sucrose was not enough to impulse FOS synthesis. In turn, although 30 and 55% (w/w) sucrose produced very similar concentrations of total FOS (DP3 + DP4), 55% (w/w) sucrose led to higher glucose generation and less DP4 formation. Hence, 30% (w/w) sucrose was the condition selected for the synthesis and further conditioning of the obtained product (stage 3). In these conditions, the final product consisted of more than 30% of short chain FOS (19% and 13% of DP3 and DP4, respectively), 55% fructose and less than 11% of glucose and sucrose. Considering that fructose has approximately double sweetening power than glucose, the obtained syrup has a bigger sweetening power in comparison with the original grape must, also providing the prebiotic benefits of FOS.Fil: Ureta, María Micaela.
